The title (Greek for “Eternal Reddish Twilight”) comes from a description of the lighting conditions under which the remainder of humanity lives, in Giorgos Balanos’ short story “Οι ονειρότοποι της Γης” (The Dreamscapes of Earth), published in the short story collection of the same name in 1979.
In the story, set hundreds of thousands of years in the future, the moon is gone and the Earth is tidally locked to the Sun, which has since grown into a red giant. One side is frozen, while the other exists in a permanent twilight, drenched blood-red by the massive star.
Humanity has long since expanded beyond Earth, and those who remain live in a constant dreaming state, in dreamscapes crafted by the story’s protagonist, whose sole purpose is to build these worlds for them.
